The Viking Trail

Began the day following the advice of the waitress at dinner who sent us 8 km up the road to Norris Point to see a view more spectacular than the tourist destination of Rocky Harbour. It was a fjord inside Gros Morin Park. The ride up to St Anthony was a lesson in geography (mountains formed through induction and abduction), trees stunted and twisted by the wind, tabletop mountains, and rocky beaches. Quaint fishing villages dotted the coast and lobster traps and chords of firewood sat on the sides of the highway in random places. But the oddest sight were the multitude of little fenced vegetable gardens in the middle of nowhere..... Saw our first moose, a very large female grazing in the ditch beside the highway and understood the signage recommending caution with a new appreciation. Crossed paths with Chris from Ontario who we chatted with on the ferry and he encountered 4 in the space of one hour. Roads are well maintained compared to New Brunswick although there are a few spots that are rippled or bumpy. Good reasons to not speed much. As well, strong winds were blowing off of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Straight of Belle Isle.
The place Erik was blown away by today was Flower's Cove, a fishing village where you can see a light house on an island off the coast, and then just beyond that the impressive coastline of Labrador. We are both in love with St. Anthony's on the northern tip of Nfld and wished we would have booked another night here at Grenfell Heritage Inn which offers a suite and a view of the harbour for the price of a room in most places. There is a lookout in Iceberg Alley where you can spot killer and beluga whales and see the icebergs drift by. We did not see these, but our timing was late by a couple weeks. Still, a spectacular view with a renowned restaurant in a renovated lighthouse keeper's house. There is a Viking feast offered here in a lodge built into the cliff side with a Viking dinner theatre. Tomorrow off to see Erik's ancestor's legacy.
