Newfoundland

On the Rock and loving it. We were so lucky with the ferry. Mechanical issues cancelled ferries the day before us and the day after, so being 4 hours late is nothing in the Islander scheme of things. Glad we booked in Port aux Basques and did not assume we would have daylight. Pace is much slower here. Attitude of all the Islanders who faced delay was "oh well, we have to go sometime" Weather is usually what causes delays. Laid back people, other than on the highways. Most folks are very purposeful in their speed, or speeding. We are careful not to be on the highways here after dark. Moose are dangerous then. Roads are twisty and in good repair with adequate passing lanes. Speed limits are usually 100 or 90, and seem reasonable, unlike Ont. which often was painfully slow for no apparent reason. Tonight we are in Rocky Harbour and today's scenery up from Port aux Basques through to Gros Morin national park was different from anything else in Canada. From windswept rocky barren landscape to lush forests, to sandy beaches and hillside colorful towns like Corner Brook. Breathtaking... Food is different too. Erik had fish cakes for breakfast, chips and hamburger and gravy for supper. Cyrus, a Harley rider from Ont. had cod tongues for supper. Me, a BLT and partridge berry pie.
